When we’re working, our insurance needs are often taken care of by the company we work for. But when we decide to work for ourselves or retire, that’s no longer the case. That’s why it’s important to consider what your insurance needs might be and to put a plan in place.
I know this from firsthand experience. My first surgery 25 years ago was taken care of by my company insurance. But my more recent appendix emergency was taken care of by the national insurance health plan in Singapore plus the travel insurance which kicked in as I had to postpone my vacation to Melbourne.

The good news is that there are a variety of insurance plans available to meet the needs of self-employed people and retirees. Here are a few things to consider when choosing an insurance plan:
- What types of coverage do you need? Do you need health insurance? Life insurance? Disability insurance? Long-term care insurance?
- How much coverage do you need? This will depend on your individual circumstances, such as your age, health, and financial situation.
- How much can you afford to pay for insurance? Insurance premiums can vary widely, so it’s important to shop around and compare different plans.
It’s also important to review your insurance coverage regularly.
Your needs may change over time, so it’s important to make sure that your insurance coverage still meets those needs.
If you’re not sure where to start, I encourage you to talk to an insurance agent. They can help you assess your needs and find the right insurance plan for you.
Here are some additional tips for choosing insurance after you leave your job or retire:
- Consider your health history. If you have any pre-existing conditions, you may need to choose a plan that covers those conditions.
- Think about your future plans. Are you planning to travel extensively? Do you have any plans to start a business? Choose a plan that will meet your needs in the future, as well as in the present.
- Compare different plans. Get quotes from several different insurance companies before you choose a plan. This will help you find the best rate for the coverage you need.
Choosing the right insurance plan can be a daunting task, but it’s important to take the time to do it. Having the right insurance coverage can give you peace of mind knowing that you and your loved ones are financially protected.
