I’ve always advocated the importance of creating a ‘memory bank’ – a collection of experiences that enrich our mental and emotional well-being. This concept becomes even more vital as we pursue active aging. Today, I’m thrilled to share the 6th installment of ‘Creating Unforgettable Memories’: my unforgettable solo trip to Mongolia.

Freedom in the Gobi Desert
Traversing the vast Gobi Desert in a rugged Russian jeep was an experience that defies words. The desert stretched endlessly, a sea of golden sands and towering dunes under the vast blue sky. There was no traffic, no road signs, just the unbridled wilderness. The jeep, tough and relentless, became my companion in this adventure, responding to the landscape’s call with as much enthusiasm as I felt in my heart.

The sense of freedom was palpable. Each turn and dip in the terrain brought a rush of exhilaration. It was here, amidst this boundless expanse, that I truly understood the meaning of adventure – unscripted, raw, and beautifully unpredictable. The Mongolian landscape and I connected in a dance of exploration, where every moment was a step into the unknown.

Living in a Ger
The experience of living in a Ger, the traditional Mongolian yurt, added layers of depth to my journey. These circular dwellings, with their felt walls and wooden frames, stood as symbols of simplicity and resilience. Inside, the Ger was a cocoon of warmth and comfort, a stark contrast to the vast, open desert outside.
The nomadic families who hosted me showed a hospitality that was both humbling and heartwarming. They shared their food, their stories, and their way of life with an openness that was deeply moving. In the simplicity of their lifestyle, I found profound insights – into sustainability, community, and the joy of living with less.

Dancing Under the Endless Sky
Perhaps the most transcendent moment of all was dancing alone in the Gobi Desert. As I moved my body to the rhythm of the wind and the soft beat of the earth, I felt an overwhelming sense of liberation. The vast sky above seemed to embrace my every move, and the horizon stretched out, limitless and inviting.
Dancing in such a raw, powerful setting was symbolic. It was a celebration of freedom, of being one with nature, and of my own spirit’s unbroken vitality. The desert, with its harsh beauty and untamed spirit, mirrored the dance of life itself – unpredictable, challenging, and stunningly beautiful.

Connecting to Active Aging
This adventure in Mongolia was more than just a journey through a foreign land. It was a journey into the heart of active aging. Stepping outside my comfort zone, embracing new experiences, and challenging myself both physically and mentally, I discovered that age is not a barrier to adventure; it is an invitation to it.
Every bump in the desert road, every night in the Ger, every step in my desert dance, was a testament to the vibrant, fulfilling life that awaits us at any age. It’s about seizing life with both hands, exploring new horizons, and never letting the spirit of adventure fade.
As I continue to split my time between Bangkok and Singapore, I carry with me the lessons and memories of Mongolia – a reminder that the journey of active aging is as much about the inner journey as it is about the external adventures.
