Explore the World: Seizing the Present Moment for Unforgettable Journeys

Aging is often viewed as a time to slow down, but I’ve always believed in living by the mantra: “Don’t wait for tomorrow what you can do today.” Sure, I haven’t always succeeded in this, but I’ve come pretty close, especially when it comes to travel, which has always been a big part of my life. Over the years, I’ve learned that there’s no time like the present to explore the world, meet new people, and immerse yourself in experiences that remind you of the beauty and resilience of life.

Syria: A Journey into the Past

One of the most memorable trips I ever took was to Syria, a country that has since been ravaged by war and no longer resembles the place I once explored. This is a reflection on a time when Syria was accessible, a land rich in history, culture, and breathtaking sites that left me in awe.

I vividly remember learning about Queen Zenobia, a powerful figure in Syrian history, who has often been overshadowed in popular culture by the likes of Cleopatra. Zenobia was a warrior queen, and her story reminded me that history is full of extraordinary women whose stories are waiting to be discovered.

Walking through the ancient ruins of Palmyra was like stepping back in time. The sense of history was palpable, and you could almost hear the echoes of the past in the stones beneath your feet. And then there was the souk in Damascus, the most atmospheric market I’ve ever had the pleasure to visit. The vibrant colors, the rich scents of spices, the buzz of life—it was intoxicating. The souk wasn’t just a market; it was a place where life unfolded in its most authentic form. I’ve never been to a place that felt so alive, so full of stories just waiting to be told.

Today, it’s heartbreaking to think that these places, once so vibrant and full of life, have been changed forever. My memories of Syria are now a window into a past that no longer exists, a reminder of the fragility of history and the importance of cherishing the moments we have while we still can.

Myanmar: Hidden Beauty in a Land of Turmoil

Putao was one of the most inaccessible places in Myanmar, and perhaps that’s why it remained so pristine. Its remoteness kept it untouched by the outside world, allowing it to maintain a purity that is increasingly rare. The air in Putao was the most pristine I’ve ever breathed, and the authenticity of the place made it feel like a hidden gem, one that most travelers had yet to discover.

Unfortunately, with the country now in turmoil under the military regime, Myanmar is in shambles. Even visiting more mainstream destinations like Bagan, a place no less magical than Putao, is no longer a viable consideration. This makes my memories of Myanmar even more precious. Each visit was a unique experience, with landscapes that were simply stunning. But it was Putao that truly took my breath away. In Putao, time seemed to slow down, allowing me to fully appreciate the beauty of nature in its most unspoiled form. The mountains, rivers, and forests were all untouched, offering a rare opportunity to disconnect from the noise of the world and reconnect with myself. Breathing in that clean, crisp air, I felt rejuvenated, as if I had found a piece of myself I didn’t even know was missing.

Now, with the country in such a tragic state, it’s heartbreaking to think that places like Putao may no longer offer the same sanctuary they once did.

Embracing the Unknown

My travels haven’t always taken me to serene landscapes and peaceful retreats. I’ve also ventured into regions with a history of conflict, such as Lebanon and Israel. These are places where the tension in the air is almost palpable, and every street corner tells a story of resilience and survival. Understanding that the situation could deteriorate at any moment, I chose not to wait. Over the past 15 years, I visited Tel Aviv and Beirut to experience firsthand what it means to live in a region under heightened security and to witness the remarkable strength and resilience of the local people.

Israel: Resilience in the Face of Uncertainty

During my stay, I took a day trip to Jerusalem, the sacred land, which was an experience unlike any other. On this tour, I connected with fellow like-minded travelers from England and Hungary. We were all there for different reasons, but the shared awe and respect for the history and spirituality of the place bonded us quickly. After exploring the ancient streets and sacred sites together, we decided to continue our conversations back at my hotel in Tel Aviv.

I had a bottle of complimentary wine waiting in my room, and we bought some cheese from a local artisanal grocer to enjoy with it. That evening, we sat together, sipping wine and sharing stories in the warm glow of the Tel Aviv sunset. It was a simple yet profound moment, where the tension of the region seemed to melt away, replaced by the universal connection of shared experience and newfound friendship. It reminded me that even in the most uncertain times, there is always room for joy, connection, and a little celebration of life’s simple pleasures.

Lebanon: A City of Defiance and Pride

Beirut has a unique energy—a city that has endured so much, yet remains defiant and proud of its identity and history. Walking through its streets, you can feel the weight of the past, but you can also see the determination in the eyes of its people to move forward. One of my most memorable experiences in Beirut was attending a free concert by the Lebanese National Philharmonic Orchestra in a beautiful church. The acoustics were remarkable, and the orchestra played with such passion that the energy and spirit of the music resonated deeply within me. It stands out as one of the most unforgettable concerts I’ve attended to date. Today, with wars raging in the region, it’s hard to imagine being able to make the same trip, and I’m grateful that I didn’t put it off.

Applying the Mantra to Life

These experiences have reinforced my belief in the importance of living in the moment, of seizing opportunities when they arise. Whether it’s places you want to go, things you want to do, or words you want to say, there’s no time like the present. I try to apply this philosophy to all aspects of my life, but travel has been where it’s truly come alive for me.

Embracing the Unknown

Travel has been a powerful catalyst for growth in my life, expanding my horizons and deepening my understanding of the world. Stepping out of my comfort zone and exploring regions and cultures I was less familiar with has shaped me into a more open-minded and compassionate person. I encourage everyone to embrace the unknown and venture beyond the familiar. Whether you’re young or older, take the leap and explore places that challenge your perspectives. You might be surprised by the invaluable lessons you learn and the rich experiences that await you.

The world is a vast and beautiful place. There are so many amazing things to see and do. Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and explore the unknown.
