Embracing Change
As I sit down to write this, I can’t help but reflect on the winding path that has brought me to where I am today. Like many of you, I was raised with the idea that a secure, established career path was the ultimate goal. We were taught to chase stability—something predictable and safe. Yet, as I entered my 40s and 50s, I noticed a sense of loss among my peers, many of whom felt adrift, unsure of what they truly wanted from life.

My Unexpected Career Shift
I started my journey in hotel management, a field that promised stability and a clear trajectory. However, life had other plans for me. I found myself drawn to the media industry—a world bursting with creativity and excitement. This shift wasn’t planned; it happened organically. I embraced the change, and for a time, it felt exhilarating. But as we all know, the media landscape is notoriously fickle. It was one of the first industries to be disrupted by digital technology. Suddenly, everything I had built upon seemed uncertain. I realized that staying relevant required constant adaptation and learning—a lesson that would serve me well in the years to come.
Lessons from Disruption: SARS, COVID, and Beyond
The external environment has also played a significant role in shaping our lives. From the SARS outbreak to the recent challenges posed by COVID-19 and the rapid advancement of AI technology, we’ve all experienced disruptions that forced us to rethink our paths. These experiences taught me an important lesson: it’s okay not to always know where you’re headed. In fact, uncertainty can be a catalyst for growth. Each disruption has pushed me to pivot and explore new opportunities. Whether it was learning new digital skills or embracing remote work, these changes have kept me engaged and excited about what’s next.

Navigating Change: Tips for Active Aging

1. Embrace Lifelong Learning
Stay curious! Whether it’s taking an online course or attending workshops, continuous learning keeps your mind sharp and opens doors to new opportunities.
2. Network and Connect
Surround yourself with diverse individuals who inspire you. Networking can lead to unexpected collaborations and career shifts that might reignite your passion.
3. Be Open to Change

Physical and mental health are crucial as we age. Engage in activities that promote wellness—be it yoga, hiking, or simply enjoying nature.
