As we welcome 2025, I find myself reflecting on the unforgettable voyage that closed my 2024—a rejuvenating Mahe Seychelles Cruise aboard the luxurious Silver Spirit It was a journey that blended stunning destinations, personal growth, and the camaraderie of fellow travelers, all wrapped up in the warmth of the Indian Ocean.
This experience was more than just a travel itinerary; it was a celebration of curiosity, connection, and the unyielding spirit of exploration—values I hold close to my heart. Here’s how this cruise became a cornerstone for my aspirations for the year ahead.
Embarking on the Silver Spirit Adventure
The cruise began on December 18, 2024, a journey that checked off destinations from my “good to have” list rather than a traditional bucket list. While I wouldn’t have flown in specifically to visit each destination based on what I knew, this itinerary—combining Nosy Be, Madagascar; Zanzibar, Tanzania; and La Digue, Seychelles—offered the perfect opportunity to explore them all in one seamless journey. It was an excellent way to experience these countries, which I might have otherwise overlooked.
What’s more, the trip served as a brilliant introduction for deeper exploration. For instance, I quickly realized that my time in Zanzibar wasn’t nearly enough; the island’s vibrant energy left me longing for more. I can’t wait to return for an extended stay and truly immerse myself in its unique culture and charm.
A Glimpse of Destinations: Highlights from the Voyage

Nosy Be, Madagascar
Nosy Be was a sensory delight, from its vibrant markets to the fragrant ylang-ylang plantations. However, what truly made this stop unforgettable was finally meeting a lemur face to face. During an onshore excursion, a curious lemur climbed onto my shoulders to reach a banana I was holding. Feeding it and watching its delicate yet confident movements was an incredible experience—one of those rare moments that reminds you of the magic of nature.

La Digue, Seychelles
My time in La Digue was like stepping into a postcard. This small island in the Seychelles offered breathtaking landscapes, with giant granite boulders framing pristine beaches. I explored the famous Anse Source d’Argent, one of the world’s most photographed beaches, and marveled at the simplicity and charm of island life. Strolling through the island’s quiet paths brought a sense of peace and connection to nature that I will always cherish.

Zanzibar, Tanzania
Zanzibar quickly became my favorite destination of the entire cruise. The island is a mesmerizing blend of life, history, and the unmistakable energy that only Africa can offer.
One of the highlights of my visit was exploring Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking through its labyrinth of narrow streets felt like stepping back in time. The stunning mix of Swahili, Arab, Indian, and European influences in the architecture was fascinating, with intricately carved wooden doors and centuries-old coral stone buildings telling tales of the island’s rich history.

The vibe of Stone Town captivated me completely. Its bustling markets overflowed with vibrant merchandise—handmade crafts, spices, and textiles—all steeped in the culture of the region. Every corner seemed to hum with energy, offering a sensory overload of sights, sounds, and scents that I didn’t want to end.

Adding to the magic of the Zanzibar was the spice tour where a live demonstration by a man who exhibited a level of agility and strength that could rival any Cirque du Soleil performer.
Effortlessly scaling a towering coconut tree, he greeted the crowd with charm and followed it with a stunning display of vocal prowess, belting out songs with such bravado and joy that it gave me goosebumps. Watching him, it felt no surprise that this island also gave the world a talent like Freddie Mercury—an icon who embodied charisma and artistic genius.
Life Aboard Silver Spirit: Luxury Meets Community
Cruise life was a delightful mix of indulgence and connection. While I typically value my solitude, I quickly found companionship in fellow solo travelers, mostly seasoned seafarers who shared invaluable insights about life on board.
Culinary Adventures at Sea
The ship’s dining scene was a revelation. Among the standout spots:
- Seishin: A Japanese gem offering a sublime omakase menu.
- The Grill: Perfect for seafood and Wagyu lovers.
- Indochine: A haven for Asian food enthusiasts.
Even the casual pizzeria offered mouthwatering delights that complemented the overall gastronomic journey.

Evenings of Enchantment
The evenings aboard Silver Spirit brought their own magic, particularly in the form of world-class entertainment. I found myself transported through time during “Soulful Journey,” headlined by the incredible Vicus from South Africa. His commanding stage presence, infectious groove, and magnificent voice filled the theater with an energy that had everyone swaying in their seats.
Another memorable evening featured the brilliant clarinet virtuoso Kenny Martyn, whose swing pieces took me straight back to the golden age of jazz. As someone who has always loved swing music, watching Kenny’s fingers dance across his clarinet while he brought those beloved classics to life was pure joy. These performances added another layer of sophistication to the cruise experience, proving that entertainment at sea can rival any land-based venue.

Personal Wellness Focus
Speaking of choices, I made a conscious decision to focus on wellness during this voyage. I decided to tackle a long-overdue goal—building core strength and muscle.
Working with a personal trainer helped me address core strength and muscle building – essential aspects of fitness that become increasingly important as we age.
These sessions provided a welcome counterbalance to the culinary indulgences onboard.

Moments of Solitude and Self-Discovery
One of my favorite discoveries was the ship’s sauna, with its breathtaking ocean views. I quickly learned that visiting during off-peak hours in the afternoon or early evening meant having this slice of paradise largely to myself.
Most afternoons, I found myself there, soaking in the scenery and savoring the rare moments of solitude.
Reflections for the New Year
As I reflect on this voyage at the dawn of 2025, I’m struck by the parallel between Linu, my personal butler, and Aashamz, my personal trainer (both Kerala natives).
Both, despite having engineering backgrounds, chose to pursue fulfilling careers in hospitality. This unexpected shift in their paths offers a powerful lesson: the importance of staying curious and avoiding becoming set in our ways.
In a world that seems to grow more complex and divided by the day, perhaps this is the spirit we need most – the courage to explore new horizons, challenge our assumptions, and remain open to unexpected joys and wisdom.
So here’s to 2025 – may we all embrace the spirit of discovery, whether we’re crossing oceans or simply crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. Let the human spirit continue to thrive, explore, and connect.
