Why Sumba? Why Now?
Sumba has been on my radar for ages, but its remoteness and lack of resorts that ticked all my boxes—exceptional service, unique ambiance, and meaningful activities—kept it just out of reach. That all changed when Cap Karoso opened its doors. This chic, understated resort promised everything I love: a blend of luxury, authenticity, and a deep connection to the local community. Still, it took me three years to make the trip happen—between planning around accessibility (Sumba isn’t exactly a hop-skip from anywhere) and waiting for the perfect moment, I was determined to make it special. When I finally booked my stay, I knew this birthday would be one for the books.

The Art of Prioritizing: Weekuri Lake and Hidden Kodi
With only a few days to soak in Sumba’s magic, I had to be strategic. My top priority? Weekuri Lake. Imagine a turquoise lagoon, its waters so clear you can see your toes wiggle in the sand below. The lake, fed by the adjacent sea, is a natural wonder—calm, cool, and utterly inviting. As a non-strong swimmer, I relished the gentle embrace of its waters, a perfect contrast to the island’s otherwise wild coastline. The sun blazed overhead, but the lake’s coolness was a divine respite.

Next, I ventured into the less-trodden paths of Kodi, the region where Cap Karoso is nestled. The resort’s “off-the-beaten-track” tour revealed a Sumba I hadn’t expected—raw, unfiltered, and breathtakingly beautiful. The landscapes unfolded like a painting, with rolling hills, traditional villages, and the kind of silence that makes you listen to your own heartbeat.

Sunset Arias and Yin Yoga: Unexpected Delights
One of the joys of travel is stumbling upon moments you never saw coming. At Cap Karoso, that moment was a sunset opera performance by Paul Gay, a bass-baritone from the Paris Opera. Picture this: champagne in hand, the sky ablaze with hues of orange and pink, and the rich, resonant notes of an aria filling the air. Paul’s brief introductions before each piece made the experience accessible, even for a non-opera buff like me. It was cultural indulgence at its finest.

Then there was the evening yin yoga session by the beach. The instructor’s soothing voice, the sound of waves, and the gentle stretch of my muscles—it was meditation in motion.
Two sunsets, two very different energies — yet both touched the same place within me. One stirred emotion; the other stilled it.

A Beach to Myself: The Ultimate Luxury
On my last morning, I found myself alone on the beach after breakfast. The tide was low, the waves gentle—almost as if the ocean knew I needed a moment of quiet reflection. I waded into the water, the different shades of blue stretching out to the horizon, and felt a deep sense of gratitude. For the first time in a long while, I wasn’t just observing the ocean; I was part of it.
A lovely massage later, I was ready to say goodbye—but not without a promise to return.

Why Sumba (and Cap Karoso) Will Stay With Me
Sumba has a soulful kind of beauty — untouched yet generous. And Cap Karoso captures that essence not through extravagance, but through elegance with purpose.
Its sustainability isn’t a checkbox — it’s a philosophy. From empowering local communities to embracing digital efficiency (yes, even that WhatsApp boarding pass), it’s clear the resort doesn’t just exist on Sumba — it exists with Sumba.
It’s now my top luxury beach resort and one of my Top 3 birthday destinations. For me, it represents a new chapter in how we define luxury: mindful, meaningful, and quietly magnificent.
